It is always easier to stay positive and keep the faith when things are going well, or at least when the positive signs are easy to see.
Everything I wrote in my last blog, Perspectives, is still true.
I still believe:
- God is a God of miracles.
- Healing can come through medicine, through miracles, or ultimately through eternity with Christ.
- Statistics do not define my future—God does.
- Every day is a gift from Him.
- My hope is found in Jesus Christ, not in a medical report.
But…
I just finished a few very rough days.
My third round of chemotherapy hit me harder than I expected. The fatigue was overwhelming. Nausea lingered for days. I had a mild reaction to the higher dose of chemotherapy. Eating became difficult. For the first time since beginning treatment, I found myself wondering, “Is this what the next few months are going to be like?”
For a brief moment, I found myself asking a different set of questions.
Do I still believe I serve the God of miracles?
Do I still believe that He can take this disease from me at any moment?
Do I still believe that whether He heals me or not makes no difference in who He is?
The answer is most definitely yes.
Shortly after my surgery, I met with my pastor, Kent, for coffee. I shared something that had been weighing heavily on my heart.
“Can a sinner like me pray for healing?”
During those first days in the hospital, most of my prayers weren’t asking God to take the cancer away. Instead, I prayed for the strength to face whatever lay ahead. Deep down, I wasn’t sure I was worthy to ask Him for a miracle.
Pastor Kent smiled.
“Mike… not just pray. But pray boldly.”
I have never forgotten those words.
Today, I do exactly that.
In fact, I boldly pray for healing every single day. I ask God to remove every cancer cell from my body. I believe He is fully capable of doing that today if it is His will.
A few months ago, I participated in the Head for the Cure 5K in Columbia, Missouri. It was a special day for my family, and I was humbled to receive the “Keeping the Faith” Award after being nominated by my father-in-law.
At the time, I appreciated the honor, but I don’t think I fully understood the depth of those three words.
Keeping the Faith.
I later learned that those words came from a man who battled glioblastoma himself. He regularly ended his messages with the phrase, “Keeping the Faith.” After his passing, Head for the Cure chose to honor his legacy by presenting a Keeping the Faith Award at each event to someone who reflects that same spirit of hope and perseverance.
This past week gave those words an entirely new meaning.
It is easy to proclaim that God is a God of miracles when life is filled with miracles.
It is much harder to proclaim it while you are waiting for one.
But then I realized something.
The difficult days had changed me.
They had changed my energy.
They had changed my body.
They had changed my emotions.
But they had not changed God.
He is still the same God I wrote about in Perspectives.
He is still the God of miracles.
He is still able to heal.
He is still worthy of my trust.
Whether He heals me today…
Whether He heals me years from now…
Or whether my complete healing comes when I stand in His presence…
None of those outcomes change who He is.
I’ve realized that keeping the faith does not mean pretending everything is okay. It doesn’t mean smiling when you’re exhausted or denying that some days are simply hard.
Keeping the faith means remembering that God has not changed, even when my circumstances have.

Those words are so powerful. I try to pray for Lou and I always say “Your will be done”. I want him to be cured and I want you to be cured. I just pray for you both every night. We don’t know why such a wonderful man like you and Lou are going thru this but again it is not for us to question why (His will be done) I am sorry you are having such a hard time. My love and prayers are being sent to you.
I am reading this to Naomi. This is what believers can cling to. God is God. He is constant. And He is Good. We love you.
Thank you so much. That truly means a lot to me.
Please tell Naomi I said thank you for reading it with you. She has a very special place in my heart, and I’ve missed seeing her. Watching her grow over the years has been such a blessing.
You’re exactly right—when everything else seems uncertain, this is what we can cling to: God is constant, God is faithful, and God is good.
Thank you both for your prayers, encouragement, and for walking this journey with us. We love you all.
Still praying and trusting the prayers will be answered.
Praying for you Mike!
Continued prayers for healing, perseverance, comfort, strength and peace in the midst of the storm
Hey Mikey, I find it very difficult to pray for myself, but pray for others without any reservation. You are very worthy of prayer and of healing and God CAN take this from you 🙂 I pray for you and so many others facing difficulties, and I have seen miracles. My husband is 10 years past a cancer diagnosis this year, we weren’t sure he’d see Timmy graduate, much less get married this year. I hope your side effects can be managed and always push for more answers and more help.
Love your big sis forever, Tracy
I can relate to all of your thoughts and emotions. I remember praying for wisdom to know what to do and when to do it. Just knowing you have the Great Healer walking with you is very comforting to your journey that lies ahead. Take “One Day at a Time”❤️
Praying for you daily that you receive peace, comfort and healing.
It’s hard sometimes to ask God for something when we all know none of us are deserving , but Jesus died on the cross for us. So now we can talk directly to Him and He does hear us and does answer our prayers. Not always get the answer we want, but like you said whatever God decides for you will be awesome! Thank you for your blog Mike. You are reaching lots of people. Praying boldly for complete healing , and peace for you and all your family and friends.
Sincerely and with love,
Pam Martin
Wonderfully written. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had rough days but I know God is the ultimate healer and he is with you, Stephanie, & Jenna. We will continue to pray for you. Keep the Faith Mike!
Hi Mike. I am so impressed with your deep, emotional sharing and you are so strong and brave to do so. You are a faith filled person and that , in itself, is a blessing!
I think of Job and how he was tested by the Lord, but he endured.
We are all tested in different ways during our lives, but walking with the Lord is the best comfort we have during these times!
Sincerely, with love and continued prayers,
Aunt Gladys
I continue to pray for you, Stephanie and Jenna. I admire your faith and spirit. Please take care of yourself. I love you!
Mike, Very inspirational! Most inspiring is that you found Jesus! Last time we saw each other was in the mid 90’s, a few years out of the Corp. I too found Jesus & what a wonderful journey that has been! You & your family will be in my prayers!
James1:2-4
Semper Fi!

P.S. Buzz came across this & forwarded it to me, that was a blessing.
Big Al! It is so great to hear from you, brother!
It brings back a lot of memories thinking about you, and Buzz. You guys were some of my closest friends during our time in the Corps. I’m thankful Buzz came across the post and thought to send it your way.
It means a lot to hear that the Lord has been working in your life too. Finding Christ has changed everything for me, and it’s always encouraging to reconnect with Marines who have found that same hope and purpose in Him.
Thank you so much for your prayers and for sharing James 1:2–4. Those verses have taken on a whole new meaning for me lately.
Semper Fi, brother. I hope our paths cross again someday.
